Metal-on-Metal Hip Implant, Safe or Not?

The orthopedic device business, over the past few years, has been put under the spotlight of doctors and regulatory authorities due to the creation of hip implants that use a design where the metal parts rub with each other.

The research into the implants identified that chromium and cobalt ions from this form of man-made hip may penetrate its neighboring tissue to damage muscle and bone and circulate to the lymph nodes, spleen, liver and kidneys, probably causing injury. The investigators were also disturbed the ions might affect an individual’s chromosomes, contributing to genetic changes.

Stryker Orthopaedics has willingly recalled two brands of its devices used in concurrence with false hips in hip replacement procedures, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration stated on their website.

There have been at least 45 adverse event reports from patients who say the devices caused pain and/or tissue swelling, and metal toxicity.

The analysts say that creators of metal-on-metal hip implants distorted the design of the hips for more than 10 years now to heighten movement for the patient, though those alterations may be liable for the dispensation of toxins in the body.

Michigan-based Stryker, which runs its biotech division in Hopkinton, Mass., recalled Rejuvenate and ABG II modular-neck stems on July 2012 from the market, and cease global distribution. The company said the occurrence of side effects is small, but people with these implants, make sure to tell your doctor that you have one.

“While modular-neck stems provide surgeons with an option to correct certain aspects of a patient’s anatomy and hip biomechanics, given the potential risks associated with fretting and corrosion at the modular neck junction, Stryker Orthopaedics decided to take this voluntary action,” Stryker Vice President and General Manager of Hip Reconstruction Stuart Simpson said in a statement.

Simpson voiced that the company would work with the medical community enhance knowledge about the complications with the devices as the company lingers to evaluate the adverse events. This contains at least 45 cases of damages, using the Rejuvenate modular-neck stem, at the start of 2012, FDA reports.

Recipients of metal-on-metal hip implants who are not suffering any of the side effects should still submit themselves to regular check-ups to their doctors.

For those that symptoms are aggravating three months or more after the metal-on-metal hip implant, they should seek instant help to their surgeon.
